The most recent free update to EQ2 added the dark elf city of Neriak to the game. In addition to the city they’ve added a not-so-new race, the evil faye. This just means that a player can now start a faye character and make them evil from the get go, and they also have the benefit of starting in the Neriak area.

All of this means that I had to resub for a month to see the new sights… of course!

Before looking at the screen shots you should know that Windows Vista has DRAMATICALLY reduced the performance of my computer. It’s a #@!$ nightmare, freezing up every few steps to load new textures or whatever it’s doing. As a result I now run around at the “high performance” setting in the game, and as a result of that, these screen shots are not going to be very good quality.

EDIT: I really should have included a link to my DxDiag. Just click here for a link to that and be sure to check the comments below for more information.

I tell ya, I’ve seriously considered buying Windows XP again (since I gave away my XP computer). . . I digress, though.

This is Sylius, my evil little Faye. She’s a cute as hell assassin, and she knows it.

I haven’t given any thought to the character’s personality because I made this character to find where Neriak was located on the map. Generally though I think of her as the evil, cute, spunky stereotype character.

It passes as RP for now, and considering how little time I spend in these games anymore I’m not entirely sure that I care to put much thought into the character. It could be a waste of time.

The Eye

Anyone familiar with Neriak from the original EverQuest will remember the floating neon “eye” in the middle of the waterfall. It turns out that the “eye” is, now at least, a stylized creature of some sort. Think of a cross between an eye and a monkey.

The area of water around the “eye” in EQ1’s Neriak was a fair bit larger than what you see here.

The Ebon Mask

Characters new to Neriak must attain citizenship. To do that they have to obtain a sponsor, and this, of course, requires doing someone’s dirty deeds.

Pictured here is an NPC at The Ebon Mask, the place that your would-be sponsor is located.

This citizenship requirement holds true for dark elves too, but I do not know if it will be true for dark elves that begin their days in the Neriak area. I can say that the quest that I received is rated as level 27, so it’s definitely not intended for new characters.

I’ve spent hardly any time running around the city, mainly because of Vista’s atrocious performance. These are the only screen shots that I have at this time. I also still need to check for the secret passage but I suspect that will be gone. According to the EQ2 story - if I’m recalling correctly - the halflings used this passage as part of their invasion of the city.

Have fun,
~Steph

Hi there - just found your blog - great to see another person loving Neriak and the similarities between EQ and EQ2! Can I ask what your system config is though? My desktop runs it pretty well on High Quality settings with Vista…I have 2GB of RAM and a 512MB NVidia card though…just curious what your setup is :-)

Oh, by the way…hope you don’t mind me adding you to my Blogroll! :)

Hello Cordanim,

Sure, it’s not a problem. I should include a link to my DxDiag, actually, so I’ll edit that in after posting here.

In regards to Vista, my computer has two major things against it. First it has “only” 1 GB of RAM, and second the 3D card is a GeForce 6800 GT. It’s not a bad card all in all and it didn’t show its age before Vista, as far as frame rate at 1280×1024 is concerned, but it has only 256 MBs of ram itself.

Here’s the DxDiag link:
http://www.stephsblog.info/DxDiag.txt

The gist:
Intel E6400 Core 2 Duo
1 GB DDR PC3200 RAM (512×2 for dual channel mode)
PNY 6800 GT (stock settings, though I could tell OC stories.. hehe)

Before moving to Vista I could easily run EQ2 at High Quality setting. I had a blast admiring the beauty of Kelethin at that setting. After moving to Vista, EQ2 (and other graphically intense games such as LoTRO) chug fiercely.

I knew that there would be a performance hit moving to Vista, but I never thought that it would be quite so significant.

As for adding me to your blogroll, of course I don’t mind :D hehe, woohoo for lnks! You have an interesting blog, I’ll likely return the favor. ;)

the issue with your performance is your ram. It is recommended just to run vista alone 2 Gigs and 4 Gigs for gaming. The reason more then 1 gig is that the OS uses 800MB or ram it would seem which doesnt leave you much to run the game thus swap space is used which will slow everthing to a halt.

Absolutely, Ben. The ram issue has been a big problem for me on Vista. All games run noticably worse, and EQ2 was one hit the hardest. Other programs tend to load slow, and the O/S itself isn’t as responsive as it definitely could be.

I was surprised that the drop in performance was so significant, but I rushed into Vista so it’s my own crazy fault.

I came very close to purchasing all new hardware when the Intel quad cores dropped in price. It would have had 8 GBs of ram along with additional upgrades, but I decided to spend the money on health and exercise products instead. :-)

The upgrade itch is definitely still there though..

Later,
~Steph
